I just updated my unit. The process was slightly confusing as it wanted to simultaneously update1) Becker Content Manager2) Unit Firmware3) Unit SoftwareUsing Windows XP when I started BCM it told me it needed to update to a newer version and would close and download it - but then got stuck in a loop where it said it couldn't update until I closed BCM, which there wasn't an option to do.I resolved this by killing the process in Task Manager while the popup window was still open, then clicking Retry.Connecting the unit to the new BCM it asked me to update the software and also the firmware. I agreed to both of these (not realising at the time they were different). The firmware downloaded quickly and asked for the reset button to be pressed on the unit - meanwhile the software update was downloading. I found a pin and reset the unit, and cancelled the software download (as was wary of it trying to update the software in the middle of a firmware update)I then restarted the software update and that proceeded successfully. So I have gone fromFirmware R22.3.1205 to R26.3.0130Software 2.0.51 to 2.5.26. I had the same issue as igk1 re 'update' not starting properly, finally worked on 4th attemptSo far the update has taken12 minutes to downloas the 'update' to Content Manager (for a 21mb file!!!)It then said it was downloading 23 Packages - total of 4333mb - 11 MinutesFirmware Download took 2 minutes going to R26.3.0130Reste the deviceOS Install took 2 Minutes - this was actual firmware being updatedThen got prompted for Software downloadDevice software another 300mb plus and Maps 3800 MB - This has been running 17 Minutes and is at 19%So its pretty slow. This is on a 9mbps ADSL ConnectionRe igk1's comments on Maps it appears the 'New' Maps are going to be from Feb 2012 so hardly up to date. Lets hope they get their act together on this for future because if next update is in 6 months they will be at least 18 months out of date then:-(.
I finally upgrade my unit (as described by IGK1) and even drive a bit.Diferenes:1) route alternatives are offered just after calculate it. This is good and works well2) more options are available at the route menu (pressing the knob on route). To check the diferences3) Now you can quickly come back to map view from main menu by pressing the back button (before it was necesary to select map)4) while driving, when appear the junction view, it is possible to go inmediately to map view by pressing the back button5) in full map view now the ETA apears in the left down corner while number of GPS and TMC sign are on te lower right cornerNo traces of tunnel view (sure that only appear if you pay) and NO CHANGE IN SPEEDCAMS!!Ok, thats enough for today!
Please complete the change list by any new functions or changes that you identify. Downloaded last night -firmware -software - map update, in total it took about 3 hours, which seems about norm for the unit. Tried it on the way to work this morning. I noted all the same changes as cfdezg I purchased, the tunnel view as it was only 4.95 euros, still not sure what it gives me.
On the speedcams I noticed that when the unit sounded a warning the icon was shown on the road where the camera is as normal. It also showed this icon in a larger view on the left hand side of the screen, cant recall if it did this before or not. Also the graphic showing the street you are turning into looks to have been made more prominent as is the box round it. Didn't download the Darth Vader voice option, might have done, but was worried that I wouldn't be able to turn it off when I got fed up with it.
Anyone know if there is an option to switch between voices if you download it. One of the biggest moans about the system seems unchanged and that's the dimming of other audio sources during guidance. It appears to be exactly the same as before, doesn't bother me, but I know a lot of people have complained about it.
If I find more changes I will post them. Mine took 2 1/2 to 3 hours to upgrade in the end too.I notice the speed camera functionality has changed too but unfortunately not for the better.I get warned when Camera is close on route or in a side street (as before) BUT now I cannot turn off the audible warning anymore that worked before if you were within speed limit. Maybe I need to play with settings some moreI also note that when it warns of what I presume is mobile speed cameras there is NO Icon in the Map to let you know where it is etc which is quite confusing. I turned off the warning for Mobile Danger Spots which avoids this as I have 'Audible Speed Warning' set to kick in at 5mph over so it tends to keep me within limit anyway.I am actually now wondering if 'Danger Spots' i.e. Speed Cameras is actually worth buying given unit by default can warn you if you go over limit but then I guess not everyone has discovered the joys of 60+ mpg when sticking to around 70.Alternative Route functionality looks like it could be quite niceTMC 'appears' to be working fine so far. I completed my little trip out and it appears that the Map Pilot is doing what it says on the tin. I can't be bothered with Darth Vader, the woman from the BBC will do, the TMC is working as well, it told me about a closure of the A41 in Shropshire that was news to me, so full marks.
The radio was tuned to Classic FM which is a station that broadcasts such data. I had previously downloaded the latest map data, so the download time for the new s/w was only about 15 minutes as I said earlier. I found another error in the map data, concerning a roundabout on the Shrewsbury bypass, it seems that Becker's cartographers drop the odd clanger.
